Mobile RV Repair in Lake Placid, Florida

Lake Placid is sixteen miles south of Sebring on US 27, and the parks and fish camps around it are a core part of our route. Two kinds of RV town in one

Lake Placid proper is a small town, 2,360 people at the 2020 census, that calls itself both the Caladium Capital of the World and the Town of Murals, with 47 murals on its buildings and most of the world’s caladium bulbs grown on farms around it. The RV side of the town is split.

Resorts. Camp Florida is an all-ages RV resort with boat slips and a fishing pier. Sunshine RV Resort is out on State Road 70 East. These run like the Sebring and Avon Park parks: sites close together, office check-in, quiet hours, a winter population that arrives in November and leaves in April.

Fish camps. The Lake Placid side of Lake Istokpoga has full-hookup fish camps like Cypress Isle RV Park and Marina and Henderson’s Fish Camp on Henderson Road, and there are at least half a dozen camps around the lake in total. The camps are a different environment: narrow lanes, boat trailers everywhere, sites backed up to the water, and a mix of weekly anglers and monthly winter residents who came for the bass and stayed. A rig at a fish camp is often older, has been in the same spot longer, and has a generator that gets real use.

What we see most in Lake Placid rigs

Everything humidity does. Istokpoga is the fifth largest lake in Florida and averages four feet deep, and the air over it in the muggy season, roughly late April to mid-November, is saturated. That shows up on rigs as rooftop AC pans overflowing through the ceiling (see AC dripping water inside), slide seals that mildew and stop sealing, and lap sealant lifting from underneath. A rig that has sat by the lake through a summer needs its roof and its AC pan looked at, in that order, in November.

Storm exposure. When Hurricane Ian crossed Highlands County on the evening of September 28, 2022, Lake Placid recorded a 66 mph gust, poles were damaged along US 27 through town, and a tractor-trailer went over on Placid Lakes Boulevard. Rigs that were here for that took wind-driven water into every seam that was not sealed and lost every unprotected converter when the power flickered. Storm season is also generator season, and a generator that sat all summer with ethanol fuel in the carburetor will not start the night you need it. The generator page covers that.

Generators at the camps. Fish-camp rigs run their generators more than resort rigs do, which means more carburetor problems, more oil-change neglect, and more control-board failures after a surge. Onan units are the bulk of it.

How a visit works out here

For the resorts: park name and site number, office check-in, park speed, quiet hours. For the fish camps: the camp name, the site, whether we can reach the rig from the lane or need to come in from the water side, and where a full-size truck can park without blocking a boat ramp. Owners who are not in Florida can have work done remotely with photo documentation, a phone call with the written quote, and a video function test.

Lake Placid is inside the standard-fee area. Lorida, around the east side of the lake on US 98, is priced by mileage and quoted before we roll, and so is Okeechobee farther east.
