Okeechobee is the seat of Okeechobee County, just north of Lake Okeechobee, about 49 miles east of Sebring on US 98. It is the far end of the area and it is priced by mileage, quoted before the trip. The drive makes sense because of the numbers: the Okeechobee KOA Resort has 800 campsites on 117 acres, Big Okee RV Park has 183, and there are more parks along US 441 by the lake. The biggest park in the area

The city had 5,254 people at the 2020 census, and the RV population around it in winter is a large multiple of that. The KOA at 4276 US 441 is a resort in the full sense: 800 sites, a nine-hole golf course, a driving range, pools, and a quarter-mile walk to Jaycee Park on the lake. Its winter season runs November 1 to April 30 at winter rates, which tells you when the park is full. Lake Okeechobee RV Park at 6070 Highway 441 SE has full-hookup sites under oaks. Big Okee is near the boat launches. US 98, US 441, and State Road 70 all meet here, so the parks are easy to find and the sites are easy to describe.

For us the KOA is a small town: a lot of rigs, most of them parked from November to April, a mix of newer motorhomes and long-term fifth wheels, and an office that sees service trucks every day in season.

Common RV problems in Okeechobee

Everything a big park generates. With 800 sites in one place, every failure in the catalog is happening somewhere on the property on any given week in season: arrival-week dead batteries, water heaters that will not light, slides that stop halfway, AC pans overflowing. That density is what makes a 49-mile drive worth it for us, which is why it pays to send your request early and mention it if a neighbor is having trouble too.

Lake humidity. Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in Florida, and the air off it in the muggy season is saturated. Rooftop AC condensate pans clog, slide seals mildew, and lap sealant lifts from underneath. The AC dripping water inside page covers the leak that is not a roof leak.

Lightning and surges. Florida leads the country in lightning density, and a park with 800 pedestals on one electrical service is a park where a nearby strike takes out converters by the dozen. If the storm was yesterday and the lights are dim today, read lightning surge damage before you call so you can report what the converter is putting out.

Generators. Okeechobee rigs run generators for fishing trips and for outages. A carburetor varnished by ethanol fuel over a wet summer is the usual reason one will not start in November.
